The development of technologies today is the economy tomorrow: Yuliia Svyrydenko

Ukraine is one of the leaders in Eastern Europe in implementing artificial intelligence (AI) in the corporate sector. Investments in Ukrainian companies using AI have grown significantly over the past 10 years and this trend continues despite the war.

This was noted by First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Economy of Ukraine Yuliia Svyrydenko during the Artificial Intelligence and Innovative Technologies panel discussion, which took place on March 14 in Italy.

“The development of technologies today is the economy tomorrow. That is why, for the effective recovery of Ukraine, digitization of all processes is a priority for Ukraine. In fact, we are now a large testing ground for the most modern technologies, both in the field of defence, in demining, and in the facilitation and simplification of doing business. Already now, our developments are interesting both as an export position for partners and as an area for investment. Investments in Ukrainian companies that use artificial intelligence have grown significantly over the past 10 years: from $42.4 million in 2014 to $440.9 million in 2021. And this trend persists, despite the war, Yuliia Svyrydenko said.

A significant part of the Government’s work is the implementation of artificial intelligence, in particular in demining, because the country’s resources are limited. As of mid-March, Ukraine has 77 demining vehicles, 32 mine action operators and more than 3,500 sappers. But this is not enough, therefore, together with Palantir Technologies, Ukraine is implementing innovative approaches to decision-making based on big-data analytics thanks to the consolidation of information from more than 100 information sources.

“We are creating a platform for data collection and in-depth analysis with the help of AI to effectively prioritize, allocate resources and so that partners who support Ukraine can clearly see how their funds are allocated. AI will help us understand which site-specific demining efforts will have the most positive impact on the economy, and which areas will be the most expensive to demine. Over time, this experience can be useful for other countries of the world, which are also faced with the problem of landmines,” Yuliia Svyrydenko noted.

First Deputy Prime Minister added that the multi-layered nature of this data will allow Palantir Technologies’ system to be used for other reconstruction needs in the future. For example, creating analytics for investors regarding the most attractive investment opportunities in Ukraine in terms of location, logistics or security.
