Ukraine is interested in supplies of high-tech energy equipment from UK – Yuliia Svyrydenko

Україна зацікавлена в поставках високотехнологічного енергетичного обладнання з Великої Британії, - Юлія Свириденко

Ukraine and the United Kingdom plan to expand cooperation in the energy sector. This was discussed during a meeting of First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Economy of Ukraine Yuliia Svyrydenko with Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce SMR Tom Samson. The parties discussed the supply of high-tech energy equipment to Ukraine, including the prospects of using small modular reactors (SMRs).

“russia cannot defeat Ukraine on the battlefield, so it resorts to outright terrorist acts destroying Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Now we need help in restoring energy supply so that Ukrainians are not left without heat and electricity in winter. Therefore, Ukraine is currently interested in supplies of high-tech energy equipment, but we are also thinking about modernization of our generation,” Yuliia Svyrydenko said.

Ukraine is interested in using new technologies for the production of small modular reactors (SMRs) in Ukraine. The Ministry of Economy will facilitate the conclusion of the relevant memorandum between Rolls-Royce SMR and Energoatom, which will determine the terms of cooperation in the implementation of this multi-year project.

For reference

Small modular reactors are a new promising technology for the use of nuclear energy. Their main differences from reactors at modern nuclear power plants are compact size and ability to produce a relatively small power output (30 MW to 500 MW). This allows using them in small towns, at industrial sites or even during blackouts, providing parallel power supply to neighbourhoods or entire cities.

Rolls-Royce has developed its own SMR technology called UK SMR (Small Modular Reactors). The company plans to build 16 UK SMR power units in the United Kingdom by 2050. The UK SMR project is expected to be certified by 2024 and the first SMR of such type to be put into operation by 2029.
