The economy started to grow: Real GDP in the first quarter of 2023 grew by 2.4% compared to the previous one

According to the State Statistics Service, as of the end of the 1st quarter of 2023, the annual GDP decrease amounted to 10.5%. This is much better than the previous estimates of the Ministry of Economy (“minus” 14.1%). This was reported by First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine - Minister of Economy of Ukraine Yuliia Svyrydenko.

“Such data indicate that the economy of Ukraine is adapting and recovering at a faster pace than previously predicted. It continues to work and overcome the challenges of war. And this is confirmed by the growth of seasonally adjusted real GDP in the 1st quarter of 2023 compared to the 4th quarter of 2022 by 2.4%. The Government’s measures to stabilize the energy situation and solve logistical problems, including access to certain seaports within the framework of the grain agreement, continue to be a support for business and the population.

The implementation of programs for the restoration and support of enterprises, which facilitate access to financial resources, in particular, the Affordable Loans 5-7-9% Program and grant programs under the general name eRobota, financing of significant amounts of capital expenditures for the restoration of destroyed infrastructure, residential and social facilities contribute to the improvement of the situation. All this becomes possible thanks to the international assistance provided by the partner countries, which in the complex fuels the restrained optimism of business entities,” Yuliia Svyrydenko emphasized.

But at the same time, military aggression continues to create new shocks and trials for the Ukrainian people. There was a delay in the work of the grain corridor, exporters felt restrictive measures by neighboring countries on the import and transit of Ukrainian agricultural goods, and the consequences of a terrorist act - the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP - are currently added to them.

In such difficult circumstances, the Government continues to actively find ways to solve problems, take measures to overcome negative consequences and ensure the conditions for the development of the economy to strengthen the movement towards victory. As noted by the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, thanks to this, the positive GDP dynamics is currently also observed in the second quarter.
