The Kakhovka HPP blowing up threatens with catastrophic consequences for the whole world, Yuliia Svyrydenko

Каховська ГЕС, CNN

The destruction of the Kakhovka HPP dam, organized by the russian occupiers, can be called one of the biggest man-made disasters in Europe in recent decades. As a result of another crime of the russian federation, 80 settlements may be flooded, part of the flora and fauna of the Kherson oblast may be destroyed, several million people may be left without drinking water, food security may be threatened, and other catastrophic consequences may occur.

“Today, russia once again proved to the whole world that it is a terrorist state, because the Kakhovka HPP blowing up will bring environmental and economic consequences, a great threat to radiation and food security. The price of building a new HPP can cost about $1 billion, since it is not only about installing new hydroelectric generating sets, but about restoring the integrity of a huge dam. It will take at least five years to restore the dam alone, and the cumulative effect of the humanitarian and environmental consequences of the detonation will only grow,” First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine - Minister of Economy Yuliia Svyrydenko commented.

Ukraine warned the world community about the threat of tragedy as early as last fall of 2022. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy personally informed the European Council and called for an international observation mission to be organized at the facility. We have no doubt that russia caused the disaster to prevent the Ukrainian counteroffensive and to inflict maximum damage on Ukraine.

“The world community should act as hard as possible towards russia. Now Ukraine needs help as soon as possible in minimizing and eliminating the consequences of the blowing up in the interests of all humanity. First of all, we are talking about the dismantling and construction from scratch of the entire complex of the new HPP. According to preliminary estimates of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources and the State Environmental Inspectorate, UAH 2 billion worth damage to water resources was caused. The amount will only increase,” Yuliia Svyrydenko emphasized.

Currently, a headquarters for the liquidation of the consequences of the Kakhovka HPP blowing up by russia has already been created under the chairmanship of the Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko.

The Government has allocated UAH 120 million to the State Agency of Water Resources for the sustainable provision of drinking water to residents of Mykolaiv and UAH 845 million to provide drinking water to residents of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolayiv and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts. UAH 1.5 billion has also been allocated for the construction of new water mains. This is necessary to provide Kryvyi Rih, Nikopol and Marhanets with drinking water. The oblasts are provided with specialized water delivery equipment and post-treatment systems.
