Ukraine became the co-author of Joint Statement on E-Commerce within the WTO

On January 25, 2019 at the World Economic Forum in Davos (Swiss Confederation) 76 WTO members, including Ukraine, accounting for 90% of the world trade, circulated the Joint Statement on E-Commerce, stating their intention:

  • to launch negotiations on trade aspects of e-commerce;
  • to achieve high results on the basis of existing WTO agreements and rules with the participation of as many WTO members as possible;
  • to take into account the unique opportunities and challenges faced by WTO members, including developing countries and least developed countries, as well as micro-, small and medium enterprises in the area of e-commerce;
  • to encourage all WTO members to participate in order to further enhance the benefits of e-commerce for business, consumers and the world economy.

Summarizing the results of the program in Davos, WTO Director General Roberto Azevedo underlined that trade was the central issue on the agenda.

“We held a series of very fruitful discussions during this week’s meetings and, in particular, saw a real progress in the negotiations on e-commerce. This is a sign of strong and very broad common commitment to the global trading system. This is especially important now when we are facing significant challenges”, said Azevedo.

More information on e-commerce is available at the official web-sites of the WTO and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine.
