What Kind of Economy Ukraine is Building: Yuliia Svyrydenko, First Vice Prime Minister, Took Part in the International Discussion
31.08.2022 | 14:30

On Tuesday, 30 August, a webinar was held where post-war reconstruction of Ukraine was discussed.

Yuliia Svyrydenko, First Vice Prime Minister – Minister of Economy of Ukraine, took part in the discussion on “Plan for post-war reforms: is there an opportunity for a civilizational leap?”.

Well-known international economic experts such as Leszek Balcerowych (Poland), Ivan Miklos (Slovakia), Anders Aslund (Sweden), Christopher Hartwell (Switzerland) and Marek Dombrowski (Poland) also joined the webinar. The event was moderated by Dmytro Boiarchuk, Chief Executive Officer of CASE Ukraine.

Yuliia Svyrydenko spoke about the 10 steps that Ukraine needs for a triple economic leap – from a transitional economy (USD 4,000 GDP per capita per year) to a developing economy (USD 12,000 GDP per capita per year). The plan is designed for 10 years and in practice means the creation of a Ukrainian economic miracle – GDP growth at the level of 7% annually over a long period of time.

The participants of the discussion supported the Minister of Economy of Ukraine in the fact that one of the key steps, the condition under which reforms are possible as a whole, is the liberalization of the economy, the creation of a free regulatory environment.

“Senseless control does not ensure people’s well-being. It only breeds corruption. So instead, we offer the philosophy of the Free Steppe – when an entrepreneur can do everything that does not violate the freedom of others and does not endanger society. Even during the war, the government began massive deregulation. We have already transferred more than 500 permit procedures to the declarative principle. And at today’s meeting of the government, the draft law on accelerated revision of the economic activity state regulation instruments was adopted,” noted Yuliia Svyrydenko.

According to experts, economic freedom is one of the achievements of the Ukrainian wartime economy.

“I am pleasantly surprised by the clear liberal principles of the 10 steps outlined by the minister. During the war, more freedom occurred in the Ukrainian economy. Simplification procedures facilitate the opening of new businesses. It is also important for the creation of a favourable environment for those willing to invest in the Ukrainian economy,” said Anders Aslund, a Swedish economist and specialist in Eastern European economics.

Yuliia Svyrydenko thanked the experts for the discussion and promised to use some of the sound ideas for the further fight on the economic front for the victory of Ukraine.
