MEDT of Ukraine works on the implementation of Economic Security Commitments to NATO

The first meeting of Inter-ministerial Expert Group for preparation and implementation of the Ukraine-NATO Joint Working Group on Economic Security Issues (JWGES) decisions was held in Kyiv on the 5th of October 2017. The representatives of the Ministry of Economic Development and trade of Ukraine, Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine and State Concern Ukroboronprom participated in the meeting. The Expert Group discussed agreements that were achieved during the 16th meeting JWGES (March 2017) and preparations for the 17th JWGES meeting.

NATO support is very important to Ukraine, especially in the context of economic security. That is why, the Inter-ministerial Expert Group analysed the implementation of the 16th meeting JWGES decisions and proposals for forms of NATO aid to Ukraine for implementation of the procurement reform of the defence order. Suggested initiatives include electronic procurement system for the defence sector. Such a system could provide transparency of procurement as well as preservation of state secrets.

To prepare for the 17th JWGES meeting, the Inter-ministerial expert group generalized proposals in the following directions: defence planning, budgeting, and efficiency of spending; national resilience and national economic security; economic aspects of defence industry reform; and energy security. The participants of the meeting paid attention to the issues of defence and security compatibility between Ukraine and NATO.
